Pregnancy Photoshoot 2.0

With or without Daddy V's yes, Mama A will surely book for pregnancy photoshoot.
After learning our photographer from our previous pregnancy is not available anymore, we looked for a new one. I'm so happy that ICO Media whose owner happened to be a family friend is back in town.

We booked a maternity and newborn session as early as April. They offered us $250 per session with edited images uploaded in google drive. Free to print and share as you wish. They require 30% down payment to block the dates. We decided to do maternity and newborn at home.

Here's our maternity photoshoot at 30 weeks.

Here's our newborn photoshoot taken at baby's 1st week.

It was fun working with Irene, a "kababayan" and owner of ICO Media. Our photo session doubled as "kwentuhan" time as well. Mama A always admire her work and highly recommend her.

Baby Sprinkle

Auntie D along with family and church co-workers threw a Baby Sprinkle for our baby girl. Mama A loved the idea of "sprinkling" with essentials since she has a lot of "pamanas" from  her Kuyas and Ates.

It was an intimate event due to pandemic. Immediate family and closest friends were present. The event set-up was amazing. The games by Auntie O are fun too. Auntie D wrote Our Left-Right Story version 2.0, which is always Mama A's favorite. We had "Pinoy" food for guests to enjoy and take home. It was lots of love and gifts for our little girl.

Our Left-Right Story 2.0

About 4 ½ years ago we all gathered together RIGHT in this same church to shower Abi and Vic with love and gifts to help them begin life with Thor.  I LEFT their story with asking for everyone to keep them in their prayers and that God deliver Thor at the RIGHT time. And Thor made his appearance at God’s RIGHT time – not necessarily his due date, but definitely God’s RIGHT time.

Once again Abi and Vic were LEFT with challenges to face. Thor was 5 weeks premature and had a few complications that required a longer stay in the NICU. Abi and Vic LEFT for home only at night to shower and get some rest.  In the morning they would head RIGHT back to hospital to help care for Thor. Abi and Vic LEFT no room for the devil to take a foothold in their hearts or in their family.    There they were a week after Thor’s birth RIGHT on stage leading praise and worship! A few weeks after his birth Thor LEFT the hospital to begin life in the Austria home.

Life changed for Abi and Vic as it does for all new parents. There is no book of instructions on raising a child or children. We are LEFT to trust and depend on the Lord for his guidance. Trust that He leads in the RIGHT direction every day. Abi was fortunate to work from home while caring for Thor. He would sleep RIGHT in the pack in play while she worked. Vic LEFT work each day eagerly looking forward to spending time with his son. They had fun this family of three being thankful for the blessings they received. Vic and Abi learned all the tricks of traveling with a baby and then a toddler as they LEFT Chicago RIGHT for Boston for Sam and Amanda’s wedding.  Then they flew RIGHT to the Philippines to introduce Thor to family and friends. They flew RIGHT to Florida, then to Qatar and then to California. Thor has more stamps in his passport than all of us combined! Thor was growing – walking, running, talking and learning. He sings praise songs RIGHT along with his mama and daddy.  He reads his bible RIGHT along side Mama at night and memorizes his weekly bible verses. He wants to take the ‘Most Holy’ award away from his Daddy!!!

Then life changed again when the pandemic hit in March of 2020. Abi and Vic, like all of us were LEFT with trying to make sense of what was going on. We had to sift through what news was RIGHT all the while wondering what God was doing. Abi and Vic conclude that they were LEFT to simply trust and depend on our Lord who is faithful. It was a hard year as travel orders and shut down orders prohibited gatherings. One thing Abi and Vic looked forward to was - Sunday worship. A time to meet their family in Christ and praise God. The joy in their praise and worship LEFT no room for anything to sneak in and draw you away from worship. They were RIGHT on it every Sunday.  Abi’s arms would be raised – first the RIGHT then the LEFT giving all she had to God. Sweat would bead on Vic’s head as his RIGHT hand strummed his guitar and his LEFT hand played the chords. This was the moment – the time – when the words pandemic and Covid didn’t exist because it was Vic and Abi in prayer with the Lord and you could see how RIGHT it was and the joy in participating in it LEFT no room for anything else but God.

Funny how when you are busy with the Lord’s work – the Lord gets busy for you.  And so in the fall Abi had this craving for cinnamon bread. She craved it RIGHT when she got up, RIGHT when she ate lunch, and RIGHT before bed. I heard that she and Thor tossed a coin once for the LEFTover pieces in the bag!!!!  Ok that part is not true! She actually gave him the pieces. She didn’t think much of it until RIGHT before Christmas when she discovered God had a plan for her family. Though Thor really wanted a brother – God has blessed him with a sister – Nika.  Please keep the Austria family in your prayers for Abi’s health and for Nika’s growth. May God continue to bless Vic and Abi to grow in their relationship with him and to teach Thor and Nika to never ever veer to the RIGHT or LEFT of God’s teaching.

Baby Registry 102

We knew from day 1 that we will utilize baby registries for baby number 2.
Here are some information that helped us decide which ones to use.

Different types of registries:

  • Store-specific baby registries. Have one store that’s either your go-to or about to be your new favorite? You can register there and have people gift you items from that one spot.
  • Universal baby registries. These registries allow you to pull in items across a range of stores. This is the way to go if you don’t want to limit yourself to just one retailer.
  • Baby registries for cash. Not totally sure what you want just yet or are saving toward a bigger item? Baby registries for cash let people donate funds, so you can ultimately pick out what you want.

Perks of baby registries:
  • Completion discounts. Many baby registry sites offer a limited-time discount that can be used towards the end of your pregnancy, so you can order any items that haven't yet been purchased for you. On some baby registries, this is a one-time coupon code, while others will let you use the discount for a certain period of time (such as a few weeks before and after your due date).
  • Extended return periods. Some baby registry sites offer extended return windows for items purchased off of your registry. This means that if you registered for a ton of bottles, but your baby will only use a certain brand, you can return any unused items for store credit — even if you were gifted them in your third trimester.
  • Free samples. Some retailers will send you a welcome box, which is a gift box with free samples and coupons that you get when you sign up for a baby registry at their website. And who doesn't love free stuff?
  • Group gifting. If you have many pricey items on your baby registry and you're concerned that you might not be gifted all of them, you may prefer a baby registry that offers a "group gifting" feature so friends and family can contribute any amount they wish towards the item.

These are the top 3 we decided to register in...

Best Baby Registry
Amazon
Pros: Massive selection, great freebies and discounts, excellent return policy
Cons: There is no brick and mortar store, so friends and family can't check out gifts in person

Easiest Baby Registry to Use
Target
Pros: Ability to look at items in person, 15 percent completion discount, impressive return policy
Cons: Less tech-savvy loved ones may have difficulty navigating it online

Best Baby Registry for Low Prices
Walmart
Pros: Ability to look at items in person, 15 percent completion discount, impressive return policy
Cons: Less tech-savvy loved ones may have difficulty navigating it online

Sunshine, Angel, Rainbow and Golden Baby

Sunshine baby is a baby that is born before a miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant death. This baby signifies the sunshine and calm before the storm. And because they remain the youngest after such a loss, they tend to bring a lot of joy, sweetness, and moral support to families going through the grieving process.

Angel baby is the baby that has passed away whether before being born or shortly after.

Rainbow baby is the baby that is born after a miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant death. This baby signifies the peace that comes after a storm. I’ve often heard moms describe these babies as ‘healing babies’.

Golden baby is the baby that is born after a rainbow baby. This baby signifies the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, and the luck parents feel at having two healthy babies in a row.

Old Wive's Tales: Baby's Gender 2.0

Let's try this again for baby no. 2

The Linea Nigra
That ‘dark line’ that has appeared on your bump is apparently the key to working out whether you’re carrying a boy or a girl. Rumor has it that if the line continues above your belly button, you’re having a boy. If it finishes below your belly button, you have a girl bun in your oven.

Mama A: Above belly button

Carrying High Or Low
This is one old wives’ tale you won’t be able to get through pregnancy without hearing. In fact, you’ll probably be utterly sick of hearing it by the time you reach your estimated due date. People just love to comment on baby bumps, don’t they? According to legend, if your bump is high, you’re pregnant with a girl. If your bump sits low, you’ll be welcoming a boy.

Mama A: Low

The Feel Of Your Skin
Carrying a boy is said to give you dry skin, so if you’re enjoying silky smooth skin, you could be expecting a little girl.

Mama A: Dry skin

It’s All In The Heart
According to age old nonsense, your baby’s heart rate can be used to predict the gender. Apparently, girls have faster heartbeats than boys. Above 140 ppm means you’re having a girl, and lower than 140 bpm means it’s a boy. Perhaps 140 ppm exactly means it’s an alien, or a puppy, who knows? But because it’s all nonsense anyway, I wouldn’t worry about it.

Mama A: Above 140 bpm

Truth Or Hair
It’s all in the hair, apparently. If your hair becomes thick and glossy, and you can’t make it down the street without being stopped by a modelling scout, you’re carrying a boy. If your hair is so dull and limp that you look like you’ve been without running water for quite some time, it’s a girl.

Similarly, your body hair is thought to provide a clue too. If your body hair is growing thick and fast, you’re said to be having a boy. If your hair growth has remained normal (don’t be too smug, you’ll still be way hairier than usual because shaving your legs while heavily pregnant is basically impossible), there might be a girl nestled in your womb.

Mama A: Thick and fast

No Time To Weight
If the thought of waiting until the birth to find out the sex of your baby is getting you down, worry no more! Simply pay attention to your pregnancy weight gain. According to an old wives’ tale, if you’re carrying all of your extra weight out front, it’s a boy. If those pregnancy pounds are piling on all over, you might be expecting a daughter.

Mama A: Extra weight out front

It’s All About The Taste
Some people believe your cravings provide clues as to the sex of your unborn child. Thinking of sugar and spice, and all things nice, it’s common sense that sweet cravings mean you’re carrying a girl. Fruit, chocolate and desserts all hint that the stork might be bringing you a daughter. Salty or sour foods could be an indication that you’re carrying a son. If you’re drooling at the thought of crisps and pretzels, there might be a boy beneath that bump.

Mama A: Salty or sour

The Ring
This old wives’ tale is so old it uses a wedding ring. For a modern version, you might prefer another ring, needle or pin. Yank out a strand of your hair, and attach the ring (or whatever you choose) to it. Lie yourself down and dangle the ring over your bump. If the ring starts to move in circles, you’re having a boy. If it sways from side to side like a pendulum, you’re going to have a daughter.

Mama A: Move in circles

Having A Barf
If you were wondering what good could possibly come from all-the-time sickness (calling it ‘morning’ sickness is clearly an issue for Trading Standards), here it is. It’s a way of predicting the sex of your unborn child. If you had your head in the toilet bowl for the first 12 weeks of your pregnancy, you’re having a girl. If you escaped without that daily vom, legend predicts you will have a baby boy.

Mama A: No morning sickness

No Easy Feet
Those extremities are also said to be useful in the quest for gender predictions. If you are suffering from a bad case of the cold feet now that you’re pregnant, you might be expecting a boy. If your feet are as warm as ever, you might be carrying a girl.

Mama A: I always have cold feet

Ready To Glow?
The old wives of days gone by thought it was possible to predict the sex of the baby based on how the mother looked. If people are queuing up to tell you just how beautiful, glowing and blooming you are now that you’re knocked up, you could be carrying a boy. If people are looking at you with worried eyes and asking if you’re feeling okay, it’s probably a daughter zapping the life out of your feeble body.

Mama A: Not heard from anybody yet

A Big Boob
It might not often be talked about in polite society, but it’s common to have one breast bigger than the other. Take a look in the mirror: if your right breast is bigger, you might be having a son. If your left is larger, it could be a little girl in your uterus.

Mama A: Daddy V said right

All Encompassing
One of the more ridiculous tales is that the direction your pillow faces can be used to predict the sex of your developing baby. If your pillow faces north, it’s a boy. If it faces south, it’s a girl. If it points east or west, the test is inconclusive. Please try again later (once you’ve rearranged your room to give you the answer you most want).

Mama A: Faces south

Spot On
According to ancient wisdom, acne during pregnancy hints that you’re having a girl. A perfect complexion could be a sign that you’re expecting a boy.

Mama A: No acne, but no perfect complexion

Urine Need Of This Test
Take a look at your wee (glamorous, right?). If it’s bright you could be carrying a girl. If your urine is dull or clear, it might be a baby boy hiding in your uterus.

Mama A: Clear

Ball About The Bump
This one is quite niche. If folks keep stopping you, to comment on how closely your bump resembles a basketball, you’re having a boy. If basketball players keep trying to dribble off with your bump, you could be expecting a girl.

Mama A: Resembles a basketball

Our Left-Right Story

So, let me tell you the story of a man named Vic and his lovely wife Abi. I need to preface this story by saying that I am a bit sketchy on some of the facts.  So, I apologize if I have any facts incorrect or took liberties with details... Well, it all started in a school, in the Philippines … RIGHT about now you are wondering what “it” is?  “It” is love… love between Victor Austria and Abigail Lapuz, but I am getting ahead of myself.

Let me back up and tell you what I know of Victor.  I have known Victor for many years.  He came to study the bible at WRIGHT College and we have been family ever since.  I have only heard of a couple of stories of Victor as a child and this comes from his mom - he loved milk and would often drink one bottle RIGHT after the other.  She would often wonder if there would be any milk LEFT for any of his siblings.  Fast forward to Victor’s school days. Victor LEFT his home every day and joined his friends at school for sports especially basketball.  He was very talented and was captured by Michael Jordan who could shoot from the LEFT side of the court, the center of the court and the RIGHT side of the court.  So, day after day – for a whole week, Victor would practice shooting hoops from the LEFT side of the court.  He LEFT no room for a missed shot when he and his friends would play their game.  When he excelled on the LEFT side – he practiced on the RIGHT side.  Day after day – one basket RIGHT after another.  He loved to play and he loved that the girls watched him play!  He might have thought that Michael Jordan captured his heart, but really it was God who captured his heart.  Victor loves the Lord.  He often spends time getting RIGHT with God - praising and worshiping His name through music.  It is often said that he memorized many bible verses perfectly.  He LEFT no room for errors and thus won the Holiness Award! In time the Austria family LEFT the Philippines and established roots in the Chicago land area.  Over time Victor fit RIGHT in with the American culture.  He went to college and graduated with not just a bachelor’s, but a master’s degree as well.

Life seemed alRIGHT with Victor except he was lonely.  (Here’s where I take liberties with the story). As he looked back on his life he thought about his classmates and one image kept coming into his mind…a beautiful girl who would watch him play basketball every day. This girl was named Abigail – Abigail Lapuz.  She is the oldest of 4 children and she understood the sacrifices families made early in life.  To support her family – her dad LEFT the family to work abroad.  So, Abi helped her mom out by shouldering some of the responsibilities of her siblings.  She was LEFT to get their bottles ready, make sure the laundry was done RIGHT and to watch to make sure they didn’t wander LEFT or RIGHT when they went to school. There were two things Abi loved besides her family – the Lord and school.  She loved to participate in worship service especially in singing.  She sang RIGHT along with the choir praising God.  She loved school too, learning and hanging out with her classmates.  She especially loved to watch the guy who tried to be Michael Jordan - Victor Austria - wondering if he could be her Mr. RIGHT.  But, then life changed, Victor LEFT and life wasn’t alRIGHT.  They were now friends separated by an ocean and half a continent with no internet, skype or text messages.  Both were LEFT to move forward in life.

Time passed and by the grace of God Victor decided to head RIGHT for the Philippines to visit family and friends. When Abi got word through mutual friends – she LEFT no room for Victor to leave without getting together.  She jumped RIGHT on the challenge of securing some time with her Mr. RIGHT!  Victor accepted the challenge and they met up before Victor LEFT to return home. We all know the story doesn’t end there – they talked, skyped, texted, and made plans.  “It” was happening…..Love was in the air!  Victor LEFT Chicago 5 months later and went RIGHT to the Lapuz home.  He asked Mr. Lapuz for Abi’s hand in marriage and with dad’s approval, got down on one knee and placed a ring on Abi’s LEFT hand!  Six months later – on a beautiful island in the Philippines Victor placed another ring on Abi’s LEFT hand and she in turn placed one on his LEFT hand – a symbol binding them together before God, their families and friends.  A week after marrying, Abi and Victor LEFT the Philippines to begin a new chapter in their lives.

RIGHT from the start, Abi fit in with our church. She and Victor lead our worship every Sunday, by getting us to be RIGHT with God by warming up our hearts through singing. Watching Abi and Victor face the challenges of friendship and marriage has been a blessing. They have been hit with some hard blows by life. Blows that could have pushed them RIGHT out of their faith, but they never strayed LEFT or RIGHT, but instead believed that God Almighty is in control and they must praise Him in the times of storms as well as in the times of peace.  They have grown together in their faith and want to pass that faith RIGHT on to their children beginning with the baby growing RIGHT in Abi’s womb.

So, as we celebrate God’s blessing on the Austria family, please make sure they are not LEFT out of your prayers. Pray that Abi may have good health to carry the baby to term and that baby “Thor” as he is called, makes his appearance at the RIGHT time next March.  May “Thor” bring Abi and Victor twice as much joy as they have brought to their parents.

Sunshine, Angel and Rainbow Babies

Sunshine baby. A sunshine baby is a baby conceived before a family is struck by loss. A baby conceived before devastation has held a place in a family's heart and their symbol of love, before they knew anything about shattered dreams.

Angel baby. An angel baby is a baby sadly lost to miscarriage, stillbirth or lost in the days, weeks, months or years after birth.

Rainbow baby. A Rainbow Baby is the understanding that the beauty of a rainbow does not negate the ravages of the storm. When a rainbow appears, it doesn't mean the storm never happened or that the family is not still dealing with its aftermath. What it means is that something beautiful and full of light has appeared in the midst of the darkness and clouds. Storm clouds may still hover but the rainbow provides a counterbalance of color, energy and hope.

Pinoy Pamahiin About Pregnancy

It's not that I believe them but here are some pinoy pamahiins about pregnancy that I grew up with.

Be Open. It is advised that the house’s doors and windows should be kept wide open during childbirth to help assure that the pregnant woman will have an easy and safe delivery. Labor is the most painful part of childbirth. This is why a lot of people abide by this belief thinking that they do not lose anything by doing so. It is a situation where there is nothing to lose and a lot to gain.

Don’t look. Husbands are advised to stay out of the delivery room and to not witness the process of his wife’s delivery. It is believed that husbands who watch their wives giving birth causes abnormalities related to their child’s blinking and winking.

Say no. Pregnant women are advised to turn down offers of being a child’s godmother. Being one may cause death of the baby that she carries inside her or the death of the child that is going to be baptized.

The Doors. Whenever a person visits the house where a pregnant woman lives, he or she should not stand or sit at the door. Doing so will cause the pregnant woman to have a hard time in delivering the baby.

To Eat or not to Eat. A person should not share a pregnant woman’s food. He or she should not eat a pregnant woman’s leftover. Doing so will make him or her very sleepy throughout the day. Aside from being sleepy, the person will also feel nauseated, just like having morning sickness.

Shellfishness. Pregnant women should not eat any shell fish especially ones that are taken from a brook. It is probably because of a shellfish’s characteristic of being slippery that it is believed that the baby may slip out from the mother’s womb earlier than the due date. Aside from the slippery ones, pregnant women are also advised to stay away from ones with pointed shells. Eating theses will make their child drool too much once it is born.

Bald Hair Day. Pregnant women are advised not to cut their hair off or even get it trimmed. Doing so will cause their child to be bald.

Don’t Cry. Pregnant women should not cry. This may have a scientific explanation behind it. However, what they believe to happen if a pregnant woman cries is that her child will be too sensitive or will be a crybaby.

Share your blessings. People should always share their food whenever a pregnant woman asks for some. If not, her baby will easily vomit when he or she is born.

Old Wive's Tales: Baby's Gender

Just for fun, I'll give my answer to the following and let's see if the how much of these are true.

The Linea Nigra

No Time To Weight

According to an old wives’ tale, if you’re carrying all of your extra weight out front, it’s a boy. If those pregnancy pounds are piling on all over, you might be expecting a daughter.

A Big Boob
It might not often be talked about in polite society, but it’s common to have one breast bigger than the other. Take a look in the mirror: if your right breast is bigger, you might be having a son. If your left is larger, it could be a little girl in your uterus.
